Do you enjoy cooking and entertaining but hate being stuck in the kitchen?  It can be frustrating getting the timing right so that your meat is cooked perfectly and not under or overdone. The Kitchen Thermometer by iDevices is a new solution to make your life easier. It uses Bluetooth technology to work with your iPhone or iPad so that you can have your meat cooked perfectly yet be with your guests instead of tied to the kitchen.

I first saw the Kitchen Thermometer at CES in January this year and have been testing it out at home ever since. I love this Kitchen Thermometer ! At first I was just using it when I was roasting big joints of meat, but I keep finding more and more times when it is useful.

To use the Kitchen Thermometer you first need to download the free iDevices connected app iDevices Connected – iDevices, LLC. This app also works with other iDevices products such as the iGrill. Install the 2 AA batteries (included) into the thermometer and attach a probe. Insert the end of the probe into your food and place in the oven, the probe’s woven stainless steel cable is flexible enough to allow the oven door to close fully around it. The temperature of the meat will show on the thermometer and also in the app on your iPhone.

With the iPhone app you can select which kind of meat or fish you are cooking and pick a target temperature based on the degree of doneness you like, or you can set your own target temperature. You can also set multiple timers to remind you to start or check different elements of your meal.  You can watch your meats progress on a graph that shows the current probe temperature and the temperature over time.

The app also includes recipe collections from Jennie-O Turkey and Omaha Steaks if you are looking for inspiration. There is also a social sharing option where you are encouraged to share pictures of what you are cooking and see what others have shared (it looks like Mark Zuckerberg enjoys his steak chargrilled!)

The thermometer includes a  magnet so will stick to any magnetic surface. iDevices also include a stick-on metal disc, so you can magnetically attach it to non-magnetic surfaces such as true stainless steel appliances. The probes have a woven stainless steel cable that stores neatly on the included holder when not in use. The Kitchen thermometer comes with 2 color-codes probes that can be used individually or at the same time. The probe holders stack and will attach magnetically to the timer so they stay together in your drawer or kitchen cabinet.

When I am cooking a big meal for guests I often find that I spend a lot of time in the kitchen to make sure everything is timed just right and cooked perfectly. Using the Kitchen Thermometer and the iDevices app really helps my organization and allows me to at least escape from the kitchen some of the time. I love having the multi-timer function, for a big meal I always plan in advance at what time I need to do each step such as putting on different side dishes, making the gravy, and taking out the meat. With this app I can set timers to remind me when I need to start cooking each dish and timers for when to check if they are cooked. With large joints of meat small differences in your oven temperature can really affect the cooking time, so it can be hard to get the timing just right so the meat is perfectly cooked. The Kitchen Thermometer takes the guesswork away- you can watch how the cooking is going at any time by viewing a graph of the food’s current and past temperature, and when it reaches the target temperature an alarm will sound on your iPhone to let you know it is ready.

It is really useful for those big meals, but I’m also finding it useful for everyday cooking as well. I love having two probes, for example when I’m cooking two chicken breasts that are slightly different thickness I can tell when each one is done to perfection, instead of having one done perfectly and the other over or underdone. If I’m cooking more than two at once I use the probes in the smallest 2 pieces of meat first, and then move them to the larger ones once the small ones are finished cooking. I also found the thermometer a lifesaver (or at least a dinner saver)  recently when I was cooking a pot roast in the slow cooker, and a fuse blew in my kitchen circuit. I had no idea how long the meat had been cooking before the power went out, so no idea how much longer to cook it for. I just put the probe into the meat, set it for well done beef ( as I like my pot roast well done) turned the crockpot to high and let the app tell me when to switch to “keep warm”.

I really love the iDevices Kitchen Thermometer and iDevices connected app, it really has made my life easier in the kitchen. One thing I’d love to see added in a future update of the app is the ability to predict when the food will be ready based on the current temperature and cooking profile – that would really be the icing on the cake!

The Kitchen Thermometer is really well designed, and made with high quality materials, so it feels like it will last well. I love the multiple timer function, dual probes, and the ability to monitor the cooking temperature without being stuck in the kitchen. The iDevices Kitchen Thermometer is definitely a permanent fixture in my kitchen!
