Fitoons by Avokiddo – Review

Fitoons by Avokiddo is an app featuring a variety of foods which encourages kids to eat healthy, exercise and get fit!

What we love…

Fitoons encourages exercise, healthy eating both on and off device. By choosing a variety of foods and doing exercise with their character they can see what impact it has on their bodies.

What we’d love to see…

Encourage kids to go play outside and exercise. When performing sports like biking and skiing have the character wear the appropriate safety equipment like a helmet to carry over what we as parents are teaching at home.

Great app that encourages healthy eating, exercise and fun! Kids are able to perform actions within the app and see what it does to the player and enables families to have discussions about the importance of exercise, healthy eating and play!

Our Rating

Fitoons by Avokiddo features a workout demo and can even be configured to vegan food only! Upon opening Fitoons, there are three choices: dress up, pick your favorite outfit and character to workout in; exercise, where a variety of exercises both indoor and outdoor from sit ups to biking are featured and when tasks are completed you earn stars; foods – choose either healthy options or not and see swhat it does to your character. There are six different appliances to choose from. Avokiddo also features a wide variety of other apps which encourage fitness both physical and brain fitness, challenges related to physics, challenges, emotions and more. Avokiddo always has great apps that I always buy and recommend!

My kids love making food especially in the blender for smoothies. As a family we talked about healthy food choices like broccoli, watermelon, apple versus unhealthy like cupcakes and pizza. One of the things about the app that was fun was you could see the character’s expression depending on food choices. Make a bad choice, and you would see the character gain weight. Make a healthy choice like an apple and you would get a smile. After eating, it was time to head in for exercise. Every time you complete an exercise you are awarded stars which was encouraging for my kids. After performing the task on screen I also encouraged them to try it at home to encourage our physical fitness. There were exercises both inside and outside which encouraged off device time.
As a parent, I liked that Fitoons encouraged physical fitness, healthy eating choices while offering kids choices for clothing. I also liked that while exercising that the character would show facial expressions that indicated exercise wasn’t always easy! After exercising for a bit, we headed back to the kitchen for a healthy snack of apple, orange and broccoli. My kids were excited when they earned more characters by completing tasks within the Fitoons. They were even more excited when we went outside to play after playing with the Fitoons!
In terms of enhancements, I would like to see a section that encourages kids to go outside and play. My kids love playing sports outside like soccer, hitting a baseball or even dribbling a basketball. Even having a simple reminder for them like the words “great job, now you try it!” would be a great addition. Having safety equipment on outside sports like biking with a helmet or skiing with a helmet and googles would help to reinforce those needed behaviors.
Avokiddo apps are child friendly! There are no in-app purchases (IAP) and they are both COPPA and GDPR complaint. Avokiddo does not collect, store or share personal information or location data via their apps. There is no advertising outside of their own apps and they are safe for young children with included parental gates. Avokiddo apps do not require the use of the internet or your data to play other than the download.
Fitoons encourages healthy eating, exercise and fun! Kids are able to perform actions within Fitoons and see what it does to the player and enables families to have discussions about the importance of exercise, healthy eating and play!

News: MOCACARE Expands Heart Health Portfolio with MOCACuff, a State-of-the-Art Blood Pressure Cuff Worn on the Cuff

MOCACuff and the MOCACARE App Deliver Results and Advice Loosening the Grip of Hypertension

November 21, 2016 – Palo Alto, C.A.—MOCACARE (, a Silicon Valley based company at the heart of the connected health movement has today expanded its range of advanced, yet super simple, cardiovascular monitoring devices with the launch of MOCACuff, a sleek FDA-approved wireless blood pressure monitor that fits comfortably on the wrist. Priced at $69.99, MOCACuff is designed with style and comfort in mind – avoiding the problems of bulky and difficult to place traditional cuffs worn on the upper arm. Without sacrificing accuracy, MOCACuff makes it easy to incorporate blood pressure monitoring into your everyday routine and receive instant, actionable insights to improve your health.

MOCACuff is the second product in the MOCACARE line. It joins the highly acclaimed MOCAheart device that uses thumb scans to measure heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and pulse wave velocity – a measurement of arterial stiffness that is correlated to blood pressure and widely recognized as one of the best indicators of overall cardiovascular health.

Worn on the Cuff

The beautifully designed MOCACuff allows those looking to proactively monitor or improve existing cardiovascular conditions with a smaller, easier alternative to bulky arm cuffs. Worn on the wrist, it is a suitable option for those who find current cuffs on the upper arm uncomfortable or ill fitting – one of

the most common problems associated with inaccurate or failed readings. Once on, the wrist is brought to heart level and a reading is ready to be performed at the touch-of-a-button. After each reading, the MOCACuff screen displays pulse rate, systolic and diastolic measurements, and a color-coded indicator that corresponds to the American Heart Association’s (AHA) blood pressure categories, allowing users to see where their health stands.

Heart of the Matter

The MOCACARE App is now the first to combine Pulse Wave Velocity and Blood Pressure to manage heart health. Both MOCACuff and MOCAheart devices connect to the MOCACARE App (Android and iOS compatible) to provide an even more intuitive and insightful heart health monitoring experience for users on their smartphone. MOCACuff sets itself apart from other devices by helping users visualize their goals and track progress through the App. In addition, it provides consumers with expertly-curated, personalized health recommendations, which are in accordance with guidelines from the American Heart Association, to achieve their goals. The MOCACARE App also provides customizable data viewing options; either by displaying results as visual trends or alternatively in a list format.

  • Features of the MOCACARE App include:
  • Easy sync – With a single tap of a button, your measurement history is synced wirelessly to your smartphone — helping you organize your health data, track and improve your health trends, and achieve your health goals.
  • Heart healthy lifestyle tips – After each measurement, receive actionable insights and tips to improve your heart health. Based on guidelines from the American Heart Association, these tips empower you to take better care of your health.
  • Visualize goals and track progress – Making lifestyle changes? See how your health indicators are improving over time.
  • Share your results – Get support and motivation from your own cheer squad. The HIPAA compliant chat platform makes sharing health data with doctors and loved ones effortless.
  • Multiple users – Allow friends/family to try MOCA devices without disturbing your health trends by removing irregular readings from your measurement history, or create new profiles for other family members.

“At MOCACARE, we’re driven by a goal to simplify heart health monitoring and to make caring for your health an easy, intuitive and reliable experience,” said Naama Stauber, co-founder and COO of MOCACARE. “Like MOCAheart before it, MOCACuff is specifically designed to be as simple as possible for everyone to monitor his or her cardiovascular health. Whether you’re viewing your measurements right away or comparing your results over time, consumers can now take back control of their health without missing a beat.”

MOCACuff is available at and is priced at $69.99. Its full range of features include:

Muse Brain-Sensing Meditation Headband

muse-sort-nyt-logo-1-4 The Muse Brain-Sensing Meditation Headband is a great gift for anyone who wants to decrease their stress level. It acts as a personal meditation coach and is used in conjunction with the Muse app on your phone plus your own headphones. Muse fits comfortably across your forehead and behind your ears and measures your brain signals. Once Muse is in place it checks for proper fit and takes a baseline reading. The app then guides you through a series of meditation exercises. Whilst you meditate you listen to different soundscapes and the soundscapes respond to your brainwaves. For instance in the beach soundscape when you are calm and focussed you hear gently rolling waves and even birds singing, as your mind wanders the ocean becomes stormy and the waves crash louder. Unlike many other stress reduction devices, you don’t need to look at the screen whilst you are meditating, you can close your eyes and relax. I find the changing soundscape a much less intrusive way of reminding me to refocus than seeing changes on a screen or hearing a voice prompt. The sessions start short at 3 minutes, and you are encouraged to increase your time meditating as it becomes a habit. You can review your meditation settings and set reminders to help meditation become a regular routine.  I have found it a great tool to help me to meditate and I’m always much more relaxed after a Muse session. Available from Target, Amazon and other retailers for US$179.99

Review of the Thermo WiFi Connected Temporal Artery Thermometer from Withings

Thermo from Withings is a temporal artery thermometer that is fast, accurate and easy to use and it’s companion app is a great way to track a child’s temperature, symptoms and response to medication during the course of an illness. A great addition to any family’s medical cabinet.

Our Rating

Ask any parent of a sick child – the last thing they want to do when a sick child finally falls asleep is to wake them up, but if they are running a fever monitoring their temperature is vital, so finding a way to check their temperature without waking them is important. When my oldest son was a baby I was faced with this dilemma, and my solution was to buy a temporal artery thermometer, they were pretty new on the market then so it was an unusual choice, but a turned out to be a great decision. I was able to easily check my son’s temperature any time of the day or night without waking him and it was much simpler to use than the ear thermometers. We had to replace that thermometer after several years but almost 13 years later the temporal artery thermometer is now used in most pediatrician’s offices I visit, and is still my preferred way to measure my kids’ temperatures. The temporal artery thermometer I bought 13 years ago is still the most popular one in the stores, so it definitely prime for an update.

With the new Thermo Withings have taken the tried and true technology of the temporal artery thermometer and brought it up to date by linking it with a detailed and informative app. I recently had the opportunity to test out the Thermo and was interested to see how it performed.Thermo with App

Why Use a Temporal Artery Thermometer?

It is quick, easy, accurate and non-invasive.
The temporal artery connects to the heart via the carotid artery and gives an accurate assessment of the temperature inside the heart and thus the core body temperature. The temporal artery comes close to the skin at the forehead and the temperature is measured via infrared using a quick swipe across the forehead.

Set Up

Before you use Thermo for the first time you need to install the free Withings Thermo app, and follow the on screen instructions to set up your Thermo. I’d recommend doing this  when you first get your Thermo so it’s all set up and ready to go when you need it. If you already have a Withings account it will import your profiles from that but you can also add additional users from within the app, this way all family members have their own health record.

In Use

To scan you simply place the Thermo in the center of the forehead, press the button and swipe gently across the forehead towards the hairline. It beeps once and lights flash to tell you it is starting scanning and twice when the reading is complete and the temperature displays on Thermo. The whole thing takes literally 2-3 seconds. The thermometer measures the temperature using infrared so you don’t even need to touch the skin. Thermo is about half the size and weight of my traditional temporal artery thermometer and both take reading in a few seconds.

It is recommended to scan 3 times and use the highest temperature reading. I found that most of my readings were within 0.1°F -0.2°F  of each other, and by taking 3 readings I could easily see if any readings were out of touch with the others.

After you have taken the readings Thermo sends the results to your phone and you can then allocate the readings to a particular person, or discard them.

The App

I love temporal artery thermometers for their speed, accuracy and ease of use but where Thermo stands out from other temporal artery thermometers is in the extra value the app brings. With the app you don’t need to remember what your child’s temperature was yesterday or 2hrs ago, thermo will do that for you. It creates a record that you can easily look back at to see how your child’s temperature has changed over time. It also allows you to make notes each time you take the temperature, plus record the child’s symptoms and any medication given, you can even add pictures. This is useful not only for seeing trends yourself, but also when more than 1 person is caring for a sick child. You don’t have to remember to ask your spouse when your child last had medicine or ask what symptoms the child had whilst you were at work. It is also very useful when visiting the doctor to be able share a record of the child’s temperature, symptoms and response to medication over the course of their illness.

The app also red flags elevated temperatures and gives advice on medication dosages based on the child’s weight and age for common over the counter medications such as Tylenol. It also gives advice on when you should call a doctor with different advice depending on the age of the child for instance any fever of 100.4F (or above) in a 0-3 month old is an emergency whereas that same temperature in a 5 year old would be considered a mild fever. It also gives advice on symptoms that are serious enough to warrant calling the doctor even if no fever is present.

Thermo from Withings is a temporal artery thermometer that is fast, accurate and easy to use and it’s companion app is a great way to track a child’s temperature, symptoms and response to medication during the course of an illness. A great addition to any family’s medical cabinet.
