What we love…

Readers learning together with Nolan on how to make monsters go away.

What we’d love to see…

Words highlighted in sync with the narration.

Summary

A great storybook to share with your children if you want to start a dialogue with them about their fears.

Our Rating

Is your young one having a hard time going to bed every night because he/she is afraid of the dark or just being alone in bed? Or perhaps he/she is being kept awake by nightmares and scary monsters lurking in the shadows.

Childhood fears are real for our kids and it is easy for us adults to ignore them just because they don’t really exist, but this doesn’t help our kids at all.

On the other hand, we can take these age appropriate fears seriously, tell our kids that it’s ok to talk about their fears and teach them how to face their fears confidently and courageously instead.

image

Pillow Mountain by Van Winkle Studio LLC offers us the perfect opportunity to do just that. It is a simple and enjoyable rhyming storybook about Nolan’s dangerous journey through the mountain in his dream, where he encounters frightening monsters and how he conquers his fears to get back to the safety of his bed. I especially like the part of the story where Nolan realizes the true form of the monsters when he turns to face them instead of running away from them.

The story is well designed for the preschool age group. The length of the story is just right. Animations are minimal and there are fun little interactive spots on each page. The narration and soundtrack together make Nolan’s adventure exciting yet scary at the same time, which is meant to engage the young readers to relate their own experiences. The dreamlike world is also ideal for kids who do not like cutesy or childish illustrations. What the app needs is an option for young readers to start the story again at the end instead of using the page menu.

image

Pillow Mountain is a great storybook to share with your children if you want a ready opportunity to discuss about their fears, whatever they may be. Most kids outgrow their childhood fears but we can make the process a lot easier with our reassurance. Summary

We love everything about this beautiful, interactive, kids book app which brings the concept of shadows to life in a fun way.

Our Rating

My Naughty Shadow - Interactive Children's BookMy Naughty Shadow by GOOD KNIGHT STUDIOS PTY LTD is an interactive story book designed for children aged 2 to 5. You can read more about it in our Developer Interview with Xander Black of Good Knight Studios.

A shadow can either be a fun or scary concept for children to understand. This story book addresses the concept with a cute story filled with beautiful illustrations, animations, a spooky but yet fitting narration and soundtrack.

iPad Screenshot 2

My daughter loves this story book and hasn’t stopped playing it and saying ‘naughty shadow’. Even though she somewhat understood the concept of shadows before, this app has definitely clarified things for her with the different pages of the book talking about the shadow during the day and night and in different settings.

iPad Screenshot 5

She really enjoyed the cute story of the little girl and her shadow especially how she was able to move the little girl’s shadow up and down stairs and click on objects to change the direction of the shadow.

We liked everything about this cute story book which has been beautifully designed, illustrated and animated, that’s why we couldn’t find anything wrong with it.

iPad Screenshot 4

This app is very easy for little ones to use, the short text makes it ideal and the straightforward hint icon of the hand and the back and forth page arrows make it easy for little ones to navigate.

There are no in-app purchases or adds, just a menu with the options to stop the narrator’s voice, the music or adjust the volume of both as well as restart the story from the beginning and hide/show hints of what objects to touch throughout the story to change things around.

Overall, we highly recommend this beautiful story book and cannot wait for the developer’s next story book.

Where Will I Go? by Digital Leaf – Review

screen where will i go?

Where Will I go? by Digital Leaf is the second storybook app in the ‘When I Grow Up’ series which is also available in picture book format.

What we love…

The fun story, characters and the little game included.

What we’d love to see…

Small glitches fixed.

Summary

Fun storybook with lots to do throughout.

Our Rating

This interactive storybook takes place in a Museum where a child and the father wonder what places in the world they could visit. The storybook transports them across the world to places like London, Spain, Italy, Mexico, America and many others. It introduces children to the joys of travelling and what adventures they could get up to when they get older.

We liked this catchy 24 page storybook with lots of interactive spots, simple text and great pictures. The narration by Brian Blessed and the characters that move around during the story both suit the book really well. The feature of the book which my daughter enjoyed the most is the little game of finding the child’s dog throughout the story. Once all found, there is a memory game that you can access which is also very entertaining.

This app is really well made, easy to use and with great hand drawn pictures throughout the book. Children are given the option of either being a girl or boy character in the story with the extra option of narration by boisterous English actor Brian Blessed.

image

Words are highlighted as the story is read out by the narrator, once read the text disappears but can be shown again by using the book icon. There is also an icon to go back to the home menu, one which tallies up the number of dogs you have found so far in the story and a left and right icon for navigation purposes. There are no in-app purchases or ads in this app. It does however have a settings page where you can turn narration on or off, switch characters and reset the app. There is also a help page with a few helpful tips, info about the developer’s other app and credits.

image

We couldn’t really fault this great storybook however we did encounter a few glitches at times where the app failed to respond for a few seconds. Overall we loved this fun and humorous storybook with lots of sounds, interactions, simple text and cute games.

Nighty Night Construction Trucks by Alexis Purcell – Review and Giveaway

Nighty Night Construction Trucks by Alexis Purcell – Review and Giveaway

What we love…

Construction truck theme, incorporation of a bedtime routine; story changes pace, light dims and lullaby plays as bedtime nears

What we’d love to see…

Interactions only working once narration complete, ability to hide games at bedtime, narration in name matching game.

Summary

Nighty Night Construction Trucks is a sweet and simple construction themed bedtime story. It’s truck theme is sure to be a hit with many young children, and it has a nice calm, peaceful feel to it, making it a great bedtime story for the under 5s.

Our Rating

Nighty Night Construction TrucksNighty Night Construction Trucks is the 4th Book app for young children from author Alexis Purcell. Her previous book apps are: The Turkey who Forgot How to Gobble; Twinkle, Twinkle Hear My Prayers and Twinkle, Twinkle Nighty Night.  Nighty Night Construction Trucks is a sweet and simple bedtime story for little truck lovers, and includes ‘read by myself’ and ‘read to me’ options, with word highlighting as it is read. Page turning is via tapping on a  arrow and a page navigation guide makes it easy to revisit favorite pages.  All external links are in a locked parents area at the end of the book and are accessed via division questions.

The story is told with simple rhyming verse and bright, cheerful, colorful, cartoon – style illustrations. The background music can be switched off independently, but does a nice job of setting the mood- becoming more calm and soothing later in the story as the trucks get ready for bed. Each page has interactive elements which let the child see how the trucks work and hear the sounds they make when working, sparkles guide the child to find all the interactions. The interactions are fun and relevant to the story, but I’d like to see them only work after the narration is finished on each page, so the child isn’t distracted.

iPhone Screenshot 2

The construction trucks are busy at work all day building a school, and by the end of the day they are tired out and ready for bed. The child can help Max the construction worker with the bedtime routine for the trucks and their pet kitty.  The trucks are washed and cleaned, tires pumped and fuel tanks refilled so they will be ready for work in the morning.  The cat has some milk before settling down to sleep with the trucks. The sky gradually darkens and in the background a lullaby plays. In my favorite scene the child gets to put the trucks to bed one by one learning the truck names as they go, putting a blanket on the excavator and a nightcap on the dump truck. Max locks the gate and turns out the light as the trucks and kitty snore away.

iPhone Screenshot 5

Many young boys and girls love playing with construction trucks and are sure to love this construction – themed bedtime story. It is a very simple, gentle book with a calming feel just right for bedtime.  As a bonus it includes a memory match game with the trucks from the story and a “match the truck with the name” game. With the match the name game the name is only written I’d like to have it spoken if the written name is touched. The games are a nice bonus but I would like an option to hide them when reading the story at bedtime.

Overall, this is a sweet and simple construction themed bedtime story. It’s truck theme is sure to be a hit with many young children, and it has a nice calm, peaceful feel to it making it a great bedtime story for the under 5s.
